Girls’ LEAP addresses the considerable violence facing girls and
young women in Greater Boston. We are concerned not only with girls’
safety, but with their ability to thrive emotionally, socially and academically
in threatening environments.
Girls in Greater Boston face both “street” violence and more
hidden violence in schools, coed youth programs, homes and relationships.
1 in 5 girls in Massachusetts will experience dating violence, which increases
their risk for future victimization and self-destructive behaviors (American
Medical Association).
Nationally, 83% of middle and high school girls experience sexual
harassment in school – more than half is physical harassment (American
Association of University Women).
Nationally, 1 in 4 is the victim of sexual assault
10 to 14 year olds are the most frequent victims of sexual assault
in Boston
Boston also has witnessed an alarming spike in girl gang activity
(Boston City Council, Task Force on Youth Violent Crime Prevention, 2006)
In almost 2/3 of sexual assault cases in Boston, the perpetrator
is an acquaintance or relative (Boston Police Department).
LEAP’s engaging program helps girls to take constructive action
despite feelings of fear. At the same time, LEAP increases girls’
self-esteem, confidence and belief in their right to safety.
